To satiate your appetite for the outdoors and immerse in stunning South Devon scenery, here are some of the best walks to suit all styles.

Leonards Cove to Blackpool Sands

Distance: 0.5 miles (One way)

For those looking for a short and sweet stroll along the South West Coast Path from Leonards Cove, it’s hard to beat the walk to Blackpool Sands. Just over half a mile from our holiday village by the sea, Blackpool Sands is one of the most beautiful beaches in the county. Set off along the coast path and get ready for a day by the sea, complete with tropical gardens to uncover and a fully-equipped beach shop.

Whether you’re just looking for a simple stroll or would like to while away the hours on the gravelly shore, this is undoubtedly one of the best South Devon coastal walks to look forward to this autumn. On the way back, head to Kendricks in Stoke Fleming for hearty replenishment.

Start Point Lighthouse Walk

Distance: 1 mile (One way)

The iconic Start Point Lighthouse dates back to 1836 and was originally built to guide vessels across the English Channel. Today, its beautiful location and sweeping views over Start Bay make it a great destination for autumnal walks. To reach the lighthouse, park in the Start Point car park and follow a relatively short and easy descent down the old lighthouse road.

Suitable for many mobility scooters, wheelchairs and push chairs, this great family-friendly walk is a real favourite for all generations. In autumn, birdwatchers can also be treated to sightings of swallows getting ready for their seasonal migration, as well as stunning birds of prey including merlin and hobby.

Slapton Sands Circular

Distance: 3 miles

The 2-mile-long Slapton Sands is one of the most famous beaches in Devon. Perfect for South Devon coastal walks in autumn, there is a 3-mile circular route that starts in the village of Slapton and skirts the beach and neighbouring Slapton Ley, the South West’s largest natural lake.

Don your walking apparel and set off for an early morning amble or relaxed afternoon. Not only can you drink in the captivating coastal views, but you can also be in for a chance of spotting some of the wildlife residing within Slapton Ley Nature Reserve SSSI. Just remember to wear good, waterproof footwear, as only parts of this route are paved.

Leonards Cove to Dartmouth (One way)

Distance: 4 miles

Starting right near Leonards Cove, this linear walk to the bustling riverside town of Dartmouth takes you from the charming village of Stoke Fleming and out along the South West Coast Path. Along the way, a real highlight includes Compass Cove Beach, a beautiful beach with a pebble-strewn shore and clear waters.

The perfect spot for a picnic, it makes for a great pitstop for drawn-out walks throughout the day – just remember to pack some treats! This lovely route also leads you past Dartmouth Castle, perched at the mouth of the River Dart. Built in the 14th century, this castle is a must-see for history buffs and can be accessed via the coastal path, providing a perfect blend of history and scenery to add to the experience.

Hope Cove to Bolberry Down Circular

Distance: 5 miles

One of the best South Devon coastal walks this autumn is the circular route featuring Hope Cove, Bolt Tail and Bolberry Down. Starting and ending in the car park in the thatched-topped village of Outer Hope, this route of just under 5 miles incorporates coastal and countryside swathes and is a real delight.

Wander past the sand-covered Hope Cove and around Bolt Tail headland (where an Iron Age cliff fort once stood) to admire the far-reaching views from the cliffs. From here, tread footsteps towards the protected nature reserve of Bolberry Down before swinging back towards Outer Hope. Finally, stop off for post-walk refreshment at the Hope & Anchor pub in Hope Cove.

Dartmouth to Brixham (One way)

Distance: 11 miles

As with all of the best South Devon coastal walks this autumn, you’ll need sturdy walking boots, waterproofs, suncream, water and snacks for the walk from Dartmouth to Brixham. One of the longest options for great walks in the region, this 11-mile route is perfect for those looking for a more challenging day of hiking and covers a range of undulating ground along the coast, as well as seaside hubs.

Maximise your autumn daylight hours and begin your day with a ferry trip from Dartmouth across the river to Kingswear. From here, you can follow the flow of the coast path past The Dragon’s Tail, Sharkham Point, Man Sands and Berry Head Nature Reserve (from which dolphins can often be spotted) to reach Brixham. The walk is challenging, but the sense of reward more than makes up for it.
