From lesser-known gems to spectacular seafront views, get your must-visit list out, we’re going to give you a local’s guide to the best pubs in South Devon.

The Cherub Inn, Dartmouth

A grade 2* listed building, The Cherub Inn, has quite the claim to fame as the oldest building in all of Dartmouth, dating back to 1380. The charm of this pub in South Devon is only increased with its historic low ceilings and timber beams, although tall folks might need to duck in various places.

The pub escaped destruction from a few fires and a bombing during the Second World War. It was restored in 1958 by Mr Cresswell Mullet - appropriately named as a landlord of a coastal pub.

The Cherub Inn is located on Higher St in Dartmouth, surrounded by high street shops like Crew Clothing. Why not work up a thirst with some retail therapy, then take the weight off and reward yourself with an ice-cold pint.

Pilchard Inn, one of the historic pubs in South Devon, featuring whitewashed stone walls, black shutters, and a vintage lamp post, exuding coastal charm and timeless appeal.

The Pilchard Inn, Bigbury-on-Sea

Serving hungry and thirsty patrons since 1336, The Pilchard Inn is infamous and one of the best pubs in South Devon. An hour's drive from Leonards Cove, a satisfied stomach and good times await those who make the trip to picturesque Burgh Island.

Historically, The Pilchard Inn served fishermen who were returning from a hard day’s work, and we would say that this is one heck of a way to end a day. It's also common knowledge that the occasional smuggler was also served.

Serving up classic British cuisine, the Inn is renowned for its dining experience. Picture yourself sitting down in The Pilchard Inn, taking in its historical setting while admiring sweeping ocean vistas, the sun gently warming your face, while you sip a perfect pint of the local Jail Ale. That’s The Pilchard Inn experience.

The Floating Bridge, a waterfront pub in South Devon, surrounded by scenic greenery and colorful flower displays, with yachts docked nearby adding to its picturesque coastal charm.

The Floating Bridge, Dartmouth

Looking for a pub close to our gorgeous seafront location near Dartmouth? Look no further than The Floating Bridge. A short 8-minute drive from Leonards Cove, The Floating Bridge has a reputation for serving up some of the best fish and chips in Dartmouth.

Boasting incredible views of the estuary and River Dart, the Floating Bridge has a heated roof terrace, perfect for these colder days when you still want to enjoy a drink outside with a view. There’s plenty of seating inside the pub though, so you’re sure to get a spot regardless of your preference.

Open daily from 11am until 9pm, the pub serves food favourites on the menu such as grilled specials and burgers. If you’re in Dartmouth and fancy good oub grub or just a quick drink, you’ll be making the right choice by heading to The Floating Bridge.

The Ferry Boat Inn, Shaldon

Better known as the FBI by the locals, you won’t be encountering any secret agents here, only good vibes and a selection of great tasting Devonshire drinks on the coast.

Located in Shaldon, with coastal views overlooking Shaldon beach, the River Teign estuary and The Ness, The Ferry Boat Inn is within an hour's drive from Leonards Cove, but it is well worth the travel.

Open daily, the FBI is dog-friendly and hosts a "ferry jam" every Thursday at 8pm, where visitors of the pub are treated to live music from numerous solo artists and bands, which perfectly complements the homely atmosphere of the FBI.

The Church House Inn, Stoke Gabriel

A 45-minute drive to from Leonard's Cove to Stoke Gabriel, the Church House Inn is a cosy and inviting pub based near Totnes. The grade 2* listed building used to be a place churchwardens sold home-brewed ales in the 17th century to raise funds until this practice died out due to Puritanism.

The Inn is actually on lease by the parish church of Stoke Gabriel, and so congregations usually gather at the Inn for socialising following morning services. Open daily from 12:00pm until 11pm, the chefs serve up great food including a renowned steak and kidney pie. The Church House Inn is one of the best pubs in South Devon, and therefore gets busy, so we recommend booking a table in advance to avoid any disappointment.
