5 of the best Dartmouth coffee shops

Fun festivals, exciting events, intriguing exhibitions, marvellous markets and fascinating heritage - there’s so much going on all year round in Dartmouth. Our local harbour town on the banks of the River Dart is a charming place to explore.

However, knowing where you are going to stop for refreshments is an essential part of any morning wander. When it comes to Dartmouth coffee shops and cafes, it can feel like there are countless options. So we got the Leonards Coves team together to share their favourite spots.

Dartmouth coffee shops to discover

There’s a strong independent streak to Dartmouth - and the local coffee shops are no exception. You’ll find every kind of cafe you could ask for in this charming town, locally roasted, artisan and accompanied by sublime foodie delights. Here are five of our highlights:

Kendrick’s

Renowned fusion kitchen, Kendrick’s has achieved local fame for their signature rack of ribs. However, when it comes to coffee, it happily holds its own among the high quality independent Dartmouth coffee shops. Boasting dishes from around the globe and an efficient yet relaxed atmosphere, you’ll be hard-pressed to resist a spot of lunch at their picturesque quay-side location. Open for coffee between 10am - 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

Bespoke

For the artisan coffee shop experience, it has to be Bespoke. This coffee lovers' dream is right in the heart of Dartmouth, serving beans roasted on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Voyager Coffee’s Nomad is the current bean of choice - an exploratory seasonal blend with a floral and fruity profile. Bespoke has also teamed with a range of local suppliers to serve organic teas, luxury hot chocolates, cakes, pastries and sourdough sandwiches. If you are a coffee connoisseur, this is the place for you.

Woodroast Coffee

A charming cafe just off the embankment, Woodroast Coffee stands out among Dartmouth coffee shops for its homemade cakes and exceptional coffee. Known locally for their friendly and welcoming service, the Italian-style food and sweet treats always get rave reviews. The ideal spot for a refreshing brew before exploring the Royal Avenue Gardens and cutesy riverside streets.

Cafe Alf Resco

Looking for brunch with your coffee? It has to be Cafe Alf Resco. A firm local favourite serving British breakfast and lunch classics in a vibrant and cosy atmosphere. Stepping into the lovely European cafe style front, you’ll find there’s a unique charm to the rustic yet comfy setting that you just can’t find anywhere else. And, of course, the coffee is excellent.

Dart Cafe

Tucked away on a little side street, the Dart Cafe is where you can really feel like a Dartmouth local. Alongside delicious coffee, there is an equally tempting menu of British seaside classics and sweet treats, scones and brownies. It’s well known for a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and very reasonable prices - plus it’s right next door to the impressive St. Saviour’s Church which is well worth exploring.

The best of the rest

There are so many great Dartmouth coffee shops that we struggled to narrow it down to just five. Here are a few more excellent options:

The Singing Kettle - if you like the tea room aesthetic but prefer coffee then head for The Singing Kettle. A gorgeous grade II listed, old English tearoom packed full of charm. While naturally specialising in cream teas, they do an excellent barista-style coffee and a range of tasty treats.

Kingsweir Coffee Co. - okay, so not technically in Dartmouth but a short and very enjoyable ferry ride away is the Kingsweir Coffee Co. A cosy little spot with just two tables, it’s an ideal takeaway spot serving top-notch coffee and paninis.

The Deli at Dartmouth - who can resist a delicatessen? Amazing local produce, award-winning cheese and delicious pastry treats alongside excellent coffee and tea. The team behind the counter are clearly passionate about food and drink - and it really shows.
